…bouncing back from adversity after his loss to Alacaraz at the French Open. But, we all need resilience to overcome our challenges:
- we can learn to control behavior and thoughts – because whilst initial thoughts can be erratic, you have a choice as to how you react.
- we can be problem solvers; and know how to prioritise.
- we can learn to manage strong feelings and consider repercussions.
Try out cognitive behavioral theory “ABBC” to explore your beliefs and the benefits thereof. I can explain more if you like, but it’s a simple yet effective approach.
Dr Lucy Hone gave a powerful Ted Talk on the subject of resilience:
- Know that “shit happens” to everyone: unfortunatley suffering is a part of life.
- Focus on what you can control/change.
- Tune into the “good” to help create a positive mindset. Acknowledge what you are grateful for, (for example, using a “daily attitude journal”: I have used one on-and-off over the years and have always found it an efficient source of strength).
- Ask yourself: is what you’re doing helping or harming; if the latter, stop.
So how resilient are you? You could start by self-assessing and then figure out what to work on.
Our method is to use our resilience diagnostic to discover your resilience “strengths and weaknesses” and then create action plans for improvement: https://online.mindshop.com/main.nsf/diagnosticbus.xsp?id=1043zi8nrhp1c
In addition, you can read “Positive intelligence” by Shirzad Chamine – let me know if you would like to borrow a copy – or use his on-line questionnaire to identify your “saboteurs”, ie factors negatively affecting performance, wellbeing and relationships:
Again, once identified, we create action plans to overcome them.
Without resilience, you are more unlikely to deal well with change, to cope with stress or maintain a positive outlook.
The good news is that you can change – I’ve mentioned our change success model previously – by developing inner strengths and skills to thrive in the face of the inevitable challenges and set-backs we all face, just like Sinner.
